In the street where you live, are you food secure?
Definition of Food Security: being able to consistently access or afford adequate food. It is said that a food-secure household is not simply fed. It is free from the fear of hunger and not forced into unthinkable options, like choosing either heating or eating.
In 2020, Resonate Together closed its venue doors due to the Covid pandemic and in line with the Scottish Governments requirements. On that first day we began receiving phone calls from our local Alloa community. They were scared they were not going to survive. In the early weeks the panic, the isolation, the lack of income for the many self employed local people meant buying food became a daily battle. We secured funding and gained community food donations to enable us to support families across our community. It really did get us thinking… what if Clackmannanshire needed to be self reliant and provide its own food for its residents? Could it be done?
As the many local supermarket employees know, Clackmannanshire is home to several big food retailers. But what if their supplies ran low, could our county feed itself? In short, no – so how do we change this situation? One aspect is to ‘get planting!’
In walked Elaine to todays Potentia Club, her usual big smile, but this time Elaine is carrying a bag full of celery (not something she normally takes for a walk). Elaine is leading by example and sharing her garden produce with others, as many people have throughout the pandemic. The inspiring and caring communities across Clackmannanshire have helped each other through difficult times. Now we have an opportunity to develop this successful sharing into a more resilient way forward through our Frequency Four program connecting with nature. Anyone for celery soup?
